Proceedings from the SAE Highway Tire Noise Symposium November 10 12 1976 San Francisco Book Review:

Although noise was the central theme, the objective of this three-day Symposium was to discuss all of the factors, and their interactions, that affect the performance of tires in doing their intended function. We were especially concerned with the relationship of these factors in regard to the potential for reducing highway tire noise, or that portion of community noise. A second objective was to provide a written record, this Proceedings, to serve as a statement of knowledge as of November 1976. This proceedings contains all of the presented papers, a transcript of the panel and individual discussions during the Symposium (edited for clarity and brevity, but not substantive content), and several pertinent statements submitted subsequent to the meeting.

The Automotive Body Book Review:

“The Automotive Body” consists of two volumes. The first volume produced the needful cultural background on the body; it described the body and its components in use on most kinds of cars and industrial vehicles: the quantity of drawings that are presented allows the reader to familiarize with the design features and to understand functions, design motivations and fabrication feasibility, in view of the existing production processes. The purpose of this second volume is to explain the links which exist between satisfying the needs of the customer (either driver or passenger) and the specifications for vehicle design, and between the specifications for vehicle system and components. For this study a complete vehicle system must be considered, including, according to the nature of functions that will be discussed, more component classes than considered in Volume I, and, sometimes, also part of the chassis and the powertrain. These two books about the vehicle body may be added to those about the chassis and are part of a series sponsored by ATA (the Italian automotive engineers association) on the subject of automotive engineering; they follow the first book, published in 2005 in Italian only, about automotive transmission. They cover automotive engineering from every aspect and are the result of a five-year collaboration between the Polytechnical University of Turin and the University of Naples on automotive engineering.

Advanced Tire Mechanics Book Review:

This book highlights the mechanics of tire performance, offering detailed explanations of deriving basic equations for the fundamental properties of tires, and discussing ways to improve tire performance using these equations. It also compares the theory with practical measurements. The book commences with composite mechanics, which is the fundamental theory for belt and carcass tires, and covers classical, modified and discrete lamination theory. It then addresses the theory of tire shape and spring properties and the mechanics of tread pattern contact properties, as was well as the performance of various tires. This comprehensive book is a valuable resource for engineers involved in tire design and offers unique insights and examples of improvement of tire performances.

Rapid Measurement of Concrete Pavement Thickness and Reinforcement Location Book Review:

This report documents and presents the results of a study that evaluated currently available nondestructive testing systems that appeared to have potential for supplementing or replacing coring in determining concrete pavement thickness and reinforcement location. The evaluation was done primarily in the field. The principal work consisted of the systems under on-the-job conditions on eight paving projects in six states. The measurement technique were employed in conjunction with statistical acceptance criteria evolved in the course of the study.
