A Fearless Heart Book Review:

The Buddhist practice of mindfulness caught on in the west when we began to understand the everyday, personal benefits it brought us. Now, in this extraordinary book, the highly acclaimed thought leader and longtime English translator of His Holiness the Dalai Lama shows us that compassion can bring us even more. Based on the landmark course in compassion training Jinpa helped create at Stanford Medical School, A Fearless Heart shows us that we actually fear compassion. We worry that if we are too compassionate with others we will be taken advantage of, and if we are too compassionate with ourselves we will turn into slackers. Using science, insights from both classical Buddhist and western psychology, and stories both from others and from his own extraordinary life, Jinpa shows us how to train our compassion muscle to relieve stress, fight depression, improve our health, achieve our goals, and change our world. Practical, spiritual, and immediately relevant, A Fearless Heart will speak to readers of The Art of Happiness and Wherever You Go, There You Are.

A Fearless Heart Book Review:

In 1979 Jon Kabat-Zinn popularised the Buddhist practice of mindfulness when he revealed that it could alleviate depression. While mindfulness is a powerful tool, it will only take us so far. Now the highly acclaimed thought leader and English translator for His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Thupten Jinpa Langri (known as Jinpa) teaches us to take the next step. He shows us that compassion correlates strongly with happiness, stress reduction, a sense of purpose, better health and a longer life. Self-compassion is the overlooked key to achieving our goals. Yet many of us resist compassion, worrying that if we are too compassionate with others we will be taken advantage of and if we are too compassionate with ourselves we won't achieve our goals in life. We can actually fear compassion. Using the latest science, psychology (from contemporary Western and classical Buddhist sources) as well as stories from others and his own extraordinary life, Jinpa shows us how to train our compassion muscle. Jinpa's programme derives from a remarkable course in Compassion Cultivation Training (CCT) that he developed at Stanford University Medical School. Much like Jon Kabat-Zinn's landmark Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction programme, CCT has already had profound effects on the many participants. Thupten Jinpa is the perfect guide to achieving a greater sense of wellbeing.

Sowing & Reaping A Fearless Heart Book Review:

"Sowing & Reaping a Fearless Heart - Convicted not Condemned" is the true story of one man’s spiritual journey through life. His journey begins in a dysfunctional household as a child with an alcoholic policeman father, a tolerant mother and a brutal older brother, and takes him through 3 failed marriages, one son and 8 years in the Marine Corps. While in the Marines, he gave his life to Jesus Christ. However, helicopter crashes and shark infested waters left him plagued with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and he resorted to self medication with drugs and alcohol. This lifestyle eventually landed him in jail and 27 months of prison. He finds his roots in his father’s childhood home of Winnsboro, SC, and begins seeking restoration from family that he’s let down over and over. On a walk home from shopping, he’s shot in the head and left for dead. This experience causes him to realize he needs Jesus more than ever and he cries out to GOD in surrender -- then finds more than he imagined. GOD heals him, restores him, and moves him to go on a mission to Swaziland in Southern Africa. He meets a kindred spirit online, a published author and high school teacher who goes on missions to Ghana, West Africa annually. Soon, they are engaged and he is ordained as a Minister. Together they form Waters Edge Ministries, planting home based mini churches and coordinating missions to Africa. An exciting journey that will provide hope for those who dare to turn it's pages. Fearless as Possible (Under the Circumstances) Book Review:

2017 Kobo Emerging Writer Prize Finalist In this smart, funny, and inspiring memoir, Donlon chronicles her impressive and storied career, which has put her on the frontlines of the massive changes in the music industry and media. She chronicles her early days at MuchMusic and the music journalism show The NewMusic, where she was a host and producer, and quickly moved up the ranks to become director of music programming, then VP and general manager. Her mandate was relevance, during a time when music videos became a medium that would change pop music and popular culture forever. She became the first female president of Sony Music Canada, where she navigated the crisis in the music industry with the rise of Napster and the new digital revolution. She then joined CBC English Radio as General Manager and Executive Director when the corporation absorbed funding cutbacks, leading to mass reductions in people and programming and leaving a shadow over the future of Canada’s national public broadcaster. Throughout her incredible journey, she shares colourful and entertaining stories of growing up tall, flat, and bullied in east Scarborough; interviewing musical icons such as Keith Richards, Run-DMC, Ice-T, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Annie Lennox, and Sting; working with talent agent Sam Feldman, media pioneer Moses Znaimer, executive vice-president of CBC Radio Richard Stursberg, and her co-host on the current affairs magazine show The Zoomer, Conrad Black. And finally, she details her life-changing experiences with War Child Canada and her work with other charitable organizations, including Live8 and the Clinton Giustra Enterprise Partnership. Told with humour and honesty, Fearless as Possible (Under the Circumstances) is a candid memoir of one woman’s journey, navigating corporate culture with integrity, responsibility, and an irrepressible passion to be a force for good.

The Fearless Path Book Review:

Leah Guy believes that disconnection is the root of all fear, and the attempt at letting go causes more problems than it solves. Debunking the myth of detachment and other popular New Age ideologies, she emphasizes that there's no escapism in emotional healing. Rather, the process is about putting the personal pieces of your heart, mind, and soul back together again. The Fearless Path offers a radical approach that will heal trauma, fear, heartache, and mental and physical health. Overcoming anxiety, sexual abuse, eating disorders, and addiction using the principles in this book, Leah has spent her life helping others find relief and freedom from personal afflictions. In The Fearless Path, you will learn: Why "letting go" is the worst advice for healing, and how to really move on. How to understand the stories your energy system tells about your mind, body, and spirit--and how to rewrite the script. How to transform fear and anxiety into love and inner peace. Why the law of attraction isn't all it's cracked up to be. Find strength and serenity in the midst of a personal storm.

Compassion Book Review:

Do you turn away from your own physical and emotional pain? Do you withhold empathy or give yourself away when witnessing another’s pain? Do you lash out or withdraw when you feel that someone has harmed you? Is it possible to learn to respond to rather than react against what feels unbearable? Drawing on her experience as a Buddhist practitioner and teacher, Christina Feldman asserts that it is possible, but only if we turn, time and again, toward compassion, which she describes as the "innate, natural condition of our hearts." She says, "You do not need to be a saint to find the grace and transformative power of compassion; you need only to be willing to pay attention to pain and its cause and to commit yourself to its end." She offers techniques for developing the capacity to hold adversity, loss, and pain—with love. Her guided meditations will teach you to cultivate and sustain compassion for the blameless, for those who cause suffering, for those whom you love, and for yourself.

Fearless in Tibet Book Review:

Nineteenth-century Tibetan mystic Tertön Sogyal was a visionary, whose mastery of meditation led him to be a revered teacher to the Thirteenth Dalai Lama. Known for his deep spiritual insights and service to the nation of Tibet, Tertön Sogyal’s ability to harness the power of the mind was born of both his profound understanding of the Buddha’s teachings and the unique experiences he had while striving for peace against tremendous odds. His life is an example of courage and diligence appreciated by spiritual practitioners of all traditions; and his practical instructions on meditation and opening one’s heart—amid conflict, uncertainty, and change—are as relevant today as they were during his lifetime. Fearless in Tibet, the first comprehensive work in English on Tertön Sogyal, captures the essence of his teachings, visions, and spiritual realizations, as well as the challenges he faced during his early yogic training and his efforts to promote harmony between Tibet and China. Combining riveting storytelling and Tertön Sogyal’s profound instructions, Matteo Pistono takes you on a journey through a mystical past that reveals practical inner guidance for today’s challenges. You will see the power of transforming negativity into opportunity, letting go of attachments, becoming mindfully present, and embracing impermanence. This intricate tapestry of intrigue and spirituality will infuse your path with timeless wisdom and inspiration.

White Eskimo Book Review:

Though less known today than contemporaries like Amundsen and Peary, Knud Rasmussen (1879–1933) was one of the most intriguing of the great early 20th century arctic explorers. Born and raised in Greenland, and part Inuit on his mother’s side, Rasmussen could shoot a gun and harness a team of sled dogs by the time he was eight. Nevertheless he was well versed in the civilized arts and came to exploration after failing to make a career as an opera singer in Europe. He was obviously more at home on the ice floes than the stage, and undertook some of the most astounding feats of endurance in the annals of polar exploration including his record-setting 18,000-mile “Great Sled Journey”—the first to traverse the Northwest Passage by dogsled. More impressively, he travelled without the elaborate preparations and large support staffs employed by other explorers, surviving with only a few Inuit assistants and living off the land. He once explained his approach by saying, “[As a child] my playmates were native Greenlanders; from the earliest boyhood I played and worked with the hunters, so even the hardships of the most strenuous sledge-trips became pleasant routine for me.” Despite his extraordinary physical prowess, Rasmussen was one of the most intellectual of the great explorers, more interested in scientific study than glamorous feats, producing (among many other works) a ten-volume account documenting Inuit spirituality and culture, an accomplishment that earned him the title “the father of Eskimology.” In this first full-length biography, Stephen R. Bown brings Rasmussen’s inspiring story to English readers in all its richness, giving White Eskimo the readability of a good novel.

Essential Mind Training Book Review:

Essential Mind Training is drawn from the earliest collection of Tibetan spiritual literature known as ?mind training” or lojong in Tibetan. Tibetans revere the mind training tradition for its pragmatic and down-to-earth advice, especially the teachings on ?transforming adversity into opportunity.” This volume contains eighteen individual works, including such renowned teachings as Atisa's Bodhisattva's Jewel Garland, Langri Thangpa's Eight Verses on Mind Training, and Chekawa's Seven-Point Mind Training, together with the earliest commentaries on these seminal texts as well as other independent works. These teachings expound the cultivation of such altruistic attitudes as compassion, love, forbearance, and perseverance, and provide numerous techniques for uprooting our habitual self-centeredness and giving us the freedom to embrace the world.

Fearless Leadership (Second Edition) Book Review:

#1 Amazon Bestseller in Leadership Wall Street Journal Bestseller An F-14 fighter pilot’s top lessons for leading fearlessly—and bringing a team to peak performance As an aviation pioneer, Carey D. Lohrenz learned what fearless leadership means in some of the most demanding and extreme environments imaginable: the cockpit of an F-14 and the flight deck of an aircraft carrier. Here, her teams had to perform at their peak—or lives were on the line. Faltering leadership was simply unacceptable. Through these experiences, Lohrenz identified a fundamental truth: high-performing teams require fearless leaders. Since leaving the Navy, she’s translated that lesson into a new field, helping top business leaders, from Fortune 500 executives to middle managers, supercharge performance in today’s competitive business environments. In Fearless Leadership, Lohrenz walks you through the three fundamentals of real fearlessness—courage, tenacity, and integrity—and then reveals fearless leadership in action, offering advice on how to set a bold vision, bring the team together (as wingmen, not Top Gun mavericks), execute effectively, and stay resilient through hard times. Whether you’re stepping into your first leadership role or looking to get out of a longstanding rut, Fearless Leadership will act like your afterburner—rocketing you to ever-higher levels of performance.
