A Fearless Heart Book Review:

The Buddhist practice of mindfulness caught on in the west when we began to understand the everyday, personal benefits it brought us. Now, in this extraordinary book, the highly acclaimed thought leader and longtime English translator of His Holiness the Dalai Lama shows us that compassion can bring us even more. Based on the landmark course in compassion training Jinpa helped create at Stanford Medical School, A Fearless Heart shows us that we actually fear compassion. We worry that if we are too compassionate with others we will be taken advantage of, and if we are too compassionate with ourselves we will turn into slackers. Using science, insights from both classical Buddhist and western psychology, and stories both from others and from his own extraordinary life, Jinpa shows us how to train our compassion muscle to relieve stress, fight depression, improve our health, achieve our goals, and change our world. Practical, spiritual, and immediately relevant, A Fearless Heart will speak to readers of The Art of Happiness and Wherever You Go, There You Are.

A Fearless Heart Book Review:

In 1979 Jon Kabat-Zinn popularised the Buddhist practice of mindfulness when he revealed that it could alleviate depression. While mindfulness is a powerful tool, it will only take us so far. Now the highly acclaimed thought leader and English translator for His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Thupten Jinpa Langri (known as Jinpa) teaches us to take the next step. He shows us that compassion correlates strongly with happiness, stress reduction, a sense of purpose, better health and a longer life. Self-compassion is the overlooked key to achieving our goals. Yet many of us resist compassion, worrying that if we are too compassionate with others we will be taken advantage of and if we are too compassionate with ourselves we won't achieve our goals in life. We can actually fear compassion. Using the latest science, psychology (from contemporary Western and classical Buddhist sources) as well as stories from others and his own extraordinary life, Jinpa shows us how to train our compassion muscle. Jinpa's programme derives from a remarkable course in Compassion Cultivation Training (CCT) that he developed at Stanford University Medical School. Much like Jon Kabat-Zinn's landmark Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction programme, CCT has already had profound effects on the many participants. Thupten Jinpa is the perfect guide to achieving a greater sense of wellbeing.

His Fearless Heart Book Review:

Twenty-seven year-old Lucy Neel is done with being a wallflower. Ready to take a risk, she pursues a vacation fling with a sexy bull rider…and winds up pregnant. Notorious playboy and daredevil bull rider Bowie West didn’t plan to seduce innocent Lucy, but the passion that ignited between them was too strong to resist. Can Bowie convince Lucy that a roving rodeo cowboy is ready to settle down? EXCERPT: “You’re getting to have quite a mouth on you, young lady.” “You’re just getting to know me better. You might not like me so much once all your illusions about innocent virgins have been dashed.” “Oddly enough, the more I learn about you the more I like you.” He stepped forward, pushing her hood back off her head and letting the rain pour down over the cascading tendrils of her dark hair. “You’re just full of my kind of surprises.” He slid his arms inside her raincoat and pulled her toward him. Warm rainwater ran into their mouths as they opened them to kiss. Steam rose gently from them into the damp air as they allowed their hands to roam over each other. There wasn’t anywhere she’d rather be than in Bowie West’s arms. When he held her, she felt safe. She’d been alone so long that she was used to being tough enough to take on the world by herself. Now that she was getting a taste of what it was like to share your burdens and your joys with someone else she in danger of becoming addicted. “I have an idea.” He took her hand and turned toward the barn. “I don’t think I’ve ever had a roll in real hay.” “I think you’ll find it rather scratchy,” said Lucy doubtfully. But then she’d never had a roll in real hay either. Rolling in the hay seemed to be pretty popular, so who was she to go against tradition? Essential Mind Training Book Review:

Essential Mind Training is drawn from the earliest collection of Tibetan spiritual literature known as ?mind training” or lojong in Tibetan. Tibetans revere the mind training tradition for its pragmatic and down-to-earth advice, especially the teachings on ?transforming adversity into opportunity.” This volume contains eighteen individual works, including such renowned teachings as Atisa's Bodhisattva's Jewel Garland, Langri Thangpa's Eight Verses on Mind Training, and Chekawa's Seven-Point Mind Training, together with the earliest commentaries on these seminal texts as well as other independent works. These teachings expound the cultivation of such altruistic attitudes as compassion, love, forbearance, and perseverance, and provide numerous techniques for uprooting our habitual self-centeredness and giving us the freedom to embrace the world.

White Eskimo Book Review:

Though less known today than contemporaries like Amundsen and Peary, Knud Rasmussen (1879–1933) was one of the most intriguing of the great early 20th century arctic explorers. Born and raised in Greenland, and part Inuit on his mother’s side, Rasmussen could shoot a gun and harness a team of sled dogs by the time he was eight. Nevertheless he was well versed in the civilized arts and came to exploration after failing to make a career as an opera singer in Europe. He was obviously more at home on the ice floes than the stage, and undertook some of the most astounding feats of endurance in the annals of polar exploration including his record-setting 18,000-mile “Great Sled Journey”—the first to traverse the Northwest Passage by dogsled. More impressively, he travelled without the elaborate preparations and large support staffs employed by other explorers, surviving with only a few Inuit assistants and living off the land. He once explained his approach by saying, “[As a child] my playmates were native Greenlanders; from the earliest boyhood I played and worked with the hunters, so even the hardships of the most strenuous sledge-trips became pleasant routine for me.” Despite his extraordinary physical prowess, Rasmussen was one of the most intellectual of the great explorers, more interested in scientific study than glamorous feats, producing (among many other works) a ten-volume account documenting Inuit spirituality and culture, an accomplishment that earned him the title “the father of Eskimology.” In this first full-length biography, Stephen R. Bown brings Rasmussen’s inspiring story to English readers in all its richness, giving White Eskimo the readability of a good novel.

Fearless Leadership Second Edition Book Review:

#1 Amazon Bestseller in Leadership Wall Street Journal Bestseller An F-14 fighter pilot’s top lessons for leading fearlessly—and bringing a team to peak performance As an aviation pioneer, Carey D. Lohrenz learned what fearless leadership means in some of the most demanding and extreme environments imaginable: the cockpit of an F-14 and the flight deck of an aircraft carrier. Here, her teams had to perform at their peak—or lives were on the line. Faltering leadership was simply unacceptable. Through these experiences, Lohrenz identified a fundamental truth: high-performing teams require fearless leaders. Since leaving the Navy, she’s translated that lesson into a new field, helping top business leaders, from Fortune 500 executives to middle managers, supercharge performance in today’s competitive business environments. In Fearless Leadership, Lohrenz walks you through the three fundamentals of real fearlessness—courage, tenacity, and integrity—and then reveals fearless leadership in action, offering advice on how to set a bold vision, bring the team together (as wingmen, not Top Gun mavericks), execute effectively, and stay resilient through hard times. Whether you’re stepping into your first leadership role or looking to get out of a longstanding rut, Fearless Leadership will act like your afterburner—rocketing you to ever-higher levels of performance.
