A Chemometrics Guide for Chromatographers Book Review:

A volume in the Data Handling in Science and Technology series, A Chemometrics Guide for Chromatographers helps bring chemometrics and statistics to the chromatographic field, with the aim of making the statistical tools understandable and useful for this community. There are excellent textbooks about chemometrics and chromatography available on the market, but none of them are devoted solely to bringing both fields together in a simple language. The nature of the data arising from chromatography deserves special attention (e.g., data alignment, hyphenation or two-dimensional chromatography). In the coming years, chromatography will have to deal with ever more complex samples and obtain more information out of them in a relatively short time-scale. However, we are unable to solve everything with chromatography alone, and for this reason chemometrics will be used more and more to convert data derived from these methods. Over recent decades, chemometricians have been busy developing algorithms and smart statistical techniques to solve the previous question: (i) to optimise analytical instruments and (ii) to extract the maximum information out of the data generated by the instruments. It is no longer possible for separation scientists and chemometricians to work in isolation, as both spheres of knowledge must go hand-in-hand. Bridges the gap between analytical chemistry and chemometrics Provides an overview of the data that arises from chromatography (i.e., data alignment, hyphenation or two-dimensional chromatography) Looks at how chemometrics can enhance chromatographic techniques

Chemometrics and Data Analysis in Chromatography Book Review:

Chromatography approaches are widely used in various life science applications. Since its invention by the Russian botanist Mikhail S. Tsvet in 1901, chromatography has increasingly developed into an invaluable laboratory tool for the separation and identification of chemical components. It outperforms older techniques (such as crystallization, solvent extraction, and distillation) by offering unequaled resolving power and the possibility of lowering detection limits to below nanogram levels. To further improve chromatographic methods, however, the use of chemometrics is advisable as an economical alternative to resolve any problematic situations in analysis. This book intends to provide the readers with an up-to-date application of chemometrics and data analysis to different types of chromatographic methods.

Handbook of Chromatography Book Review:

Handbook of Chromatography features tables and chromatograms, theoretical discussions, and practical applications on the topic. Tables and chromatograms are based on polymer analyses abstracted from literature references dating from 1981-1991. Compounds presented in the tables and chromatograms include residual monomers, plasticizers, additives, antioxidants, and products from the thermal degradation (pyrolysis) of a broad range of synthetic polymers. Theoretical discussions focus on new developments in the respective areas of gas, pyrolysis-gas, liquid, and size exclusion chromatographic separations. Capillary column technology, inverse gas chromatography (IGC), supercritical fluid extractions (SFE), and supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) are also covered. A Practical Applications subsection provides a list of commercial suppliers of column packings and packed columns for gas and liquid chromatography. The book will be an excellent reference for chromatographers, organic chemists, and analytical chemists.

Chromatographic Analysis of the Environment Third Edition Book Review:

Chromatographic Analysis of the Environment, Third Edition is a detailed handbook on different chromatographic analysis techniques and chromatographic data for compounds found in air, water, soil, and sludge. Taking on a new perspective from previous editions, this third edition discusses the parameters of each environmental compartment in a consistent format that highlights preparation techniques, chromatographic separation methods, and detection methods. Most of the data are compiled in tables and figures to elucidate the text as needed. Separate chapters approach specific aspects of sampling methods especially designed for environmental purposes, quantification of environmental analytes in difficult matrices, and data handling. The second part of the book focuses on the analysis of hazardous chemicals in the environment, including volatile organic carbons (VOCs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs). In addition, the authors feature information on compounds such as phosphates, organic acids, halogenated VOCs, amines, and n-ntirosamines, isocyanates, phthalate esters, and humic substances. Presenting important theoretical and practical aspects from sample collection to laboratory analysis, Chromatographic Analysis of the Environment, Third Edition is a unique resource of chromatographic techniques, data, and references that are useful to all scientists involved in the analysis of environmental compounds.

Experimental Design A Chemometric Approach Book Review:

Now available is the second edition of a book which has been described as "...an exceptionally lucid, easy-to-read presentation... would be an excellent addition to the collection of every analytical chemist. I recommend it with great enthusiasm." (Analytical Chemistry) N.R. Draper reviewed the first edition in Publication of the International Statistical Institute "...discussion is careful, sensible, amicable, and modern and can be recommended for the intended readership." The scope of the first edition has been revised, enlarged and expanded. Approximately 30% of the text is new. The book first introduces the reader to the fundamentals of experimental design. Systems theory, response surface concepts, and basic statistics serve as a basis for the further development of matrix least squares and hypothesis testing. The effects of different experimental designs and different models on the variance-covariance matrix and on the analysis of variance (ANOVA) are extensively discussed. Applications and advanced topics (such as confidence bands, rotatability, and confounding) complete the text. Numerous worked examples are presented. The clear and practical approach adopted by the authors makes the book applicable to a wide audience. It will appeal particularly to those with a practical need (scientists, engineers, managers, research workers) who have completed their formal education but who still need to know efficient ways of carrying out experiments. It will also be an ideal text for advanced undergraduate and graduate students following courses in chemometrics, data acquisition and treatment, and design of experiments.
