A Birthday Lunch Book Review:

When not solving mysteries in his beloved little town of St. Denis, Bruno, the chief of police, likes to cook and share his meals with local guests and dear friends. For his friend Florence’s birthday, Bruno is preparing a surprise. But, like much else in St. Denis, it’s a communal effort, and one that Bruno pulls off with a little help from the countryside and the town. He finds an ancient hand axe in the ground during his morning run with his dog Balzac—it will make a spectacular gift—picks up newspapers for wrapping by the medical center, and gathers fresh nettles from by his chicken coop and thyme from his garden for soup and garnish. It’ll be the perfect day for Bruno and his guests to celebrate their collective history. A Vintage Shorts original. An ebook short.

The Birthday Lunch Book Review:

Free-spirited Lily has always played the peacemaker between her fierce, doting sister, Laverne, and her own loving, garrulous husband, Hal, as they competed for her attention. The competition has only grown worse since the three of them moved into a large house in the town of Sussex, New Brunswick. On Lily's 58th birthday, a steamy day in late June, Laverne feels she has bested Hal by winning her sister's company for a gourmet lunch, but it becomes a bitter and short-lived victory when the day's events take an unexpected and tragic turn.

Swamp Water Book Review:

Victoria's perfect birthday meal comes from a very unexpected place! Victoria's grandmother is taking her out for a very special birthday lunch. And because it's a very special birthday lunch, Victoria's grandmother takes her to a very fancy restaurant. But because it's a very fancy restaurant, they don't make hamburgers OR chicken fingers and French fries OR tacos OR Swamp Water! What's a hungry girl to do? Maybe give the restaurant some helpful suggestions of what SHOULD be on their menu? In true Munsch fashion, Swamp Water is an uproarious treat, which will resonate with all of the picky eaters out there . . . and the grown-ups who try to feed them.

Angel Messages Book Review:

Angel Messages presents an inspiring collection of six uplifting stories for children in which angels, in human or spiritual form, help children cope with the problems of their world. The angels transform problems by offering faith, hope, love, and the sense that miracles can be a part of children’s daily lives. Johnny copes with the loneliness of a life with a nanny and a mother who must travel for business, while Janet transforms her wonderful birthday present and celebration into an opportunity to give to others less fortunate. The stories in this collection cover current topics, such as homelessness, child abuse, and assisting the elderly. An angel or angelic presence is the centerpiece of each story, making his or her presence known in a unique way. Full of universal stories speaking to those who have experienced challenges in their lives, this collection will enrich imaginations and help children develop a better understanding of life and spirituality from an early age. Angel Messages seeks to warm the hearts of all who read it while providing them with much to ponder in everyday life.

After we come home and get cleaned up, we are going to rest a little bit. At 12:30, Mom, Dad, the Callums, and I will be enjoying a birthday lunch for me at Pei-Wei. A couple of hours later, Kenzie, Hadley, and I will be going to Galleria Dallas to look and buy party dresses for tonight. After all, tonight is my birthday party that my record company is throwing me at the Hyatt Regency Dallas. Longing for more than yet another limp salad? Tired of tussling with the kids over junk food lunch kits? Sounds like you’ve got the lunch box blues. J. M. Hirsch has the fix. But it isn’t a cookbook. Because when it comes to lunch, nobody has time to break out a recipe to bang out a brown bag special. Busy people need lunch ideas. Lots of them. And those ideas need to be healthy, fast, easy, affordable, and delicious. That’s what Beating the Lunch Box Blues is—an idea book to inspire anyone daunted by the daily ordeal of packing lunch. Whether you want to jazz up a grilled cheese, turn leftover steak into a DIY taco kit, or make pizza “sushi,” Hirsch has it covered. And because the best lunches often are built from the leftovers of great suppers, he has also included 30 fast and flavorful dinner recipes designed to make enough for tomorrow, too. Crazy good stuff like short ribs braised in a Rosemary-Port Sauce, Hoisin-Glazed Meatloaf, and kid-friendly classics such as Turkey Sloppy Joes and American Chop Suey. Giselle Book Review:

"Thank you guys SO much for coming over and helping me set up for tonight!"I smiled, as my best friends, twins Tawny and Sara, and I set up for my big party tonight."Are you kidding? We are happy to do it!" Sara piped."That we are!" Tawny smiled. After all, the birthday girl should barely have to lift a finger on her big day!""Speak-ing of today, has your Mr. Wonder-ful called to wish you a happy birthday yet?""He called this morning before the three of us left for our spa morning and birthday lunch." Frown-ing a little, I said, "I wish he and his sister could be here for my co-ed sleep over birthday party tonight."

Silent No More Book Review:

Author Rebecca Waites grew up in a violent home in the midst of a violent society. Belfast in the 1970s was a rough place, and it changed the way she saw the world forever. Silent No More offers an authentic account of the life of a working-class Belfast woman, following Waites from her earliest beginnings through middle age and on to her years as a grandmother. She shares how and why she survived the turmoil that marred her early life, dealing her abusive father and living through the Troubles in Northern Ireland. Her marriage to a sadistic, manipulative man brought further problems for her and her children, having lasting effects on their relationships. She began writing for her children, now adults, to help them understand what her history had been like from her perspective, and now she hopes her story may help others in similar circumstances who feel helpless and alone. The memoir presents the life story of a woman who lived through a violent and turbulent time in the midst of an abusive upbringing and yet found peace and triumph in her own way.

There were three or four other Terrapins in the dining room by now: innocuous-looking men in sober suits, who peered respectfully at the wine list and the framed photograph of the Duke of Windsor drinking a cocktail and looking as if he had just stepped in something nasty. An excerpt from D.J. Taylor's new collection Wrote For Luck, Birthday Lunch is a story of years passing, years wasted and bloody awkward conversations ...

A Really Big Lunch Book Review:

An essay collection from “the Henry Miller of food writing” and New York Times–bestselling author of The Raw and the Cooked (The Wall Street Journal). Jim Harrison was beloved for his untamed prose and larger-than-life appetite. Collecting many of his most entertaining and inspired food pieces for the first time, A Really Big Lunch “brings him roaring to the page again in all his unapologetic immoderacy, with spicy bon mots and salty language augmented by family photographs” (NPR). From the titular New Yorker article about a French lunch that went to thirty-seven courses, to essays on the relationship between hunter and prey, or the obscure language of wine reviews, A Really Big Lunch is shot through with Harrison’s aperçus and delight in the pleasures of the senses. Between the lines the pieces give glimpses of Harrison’s life over the last three decades. Including articles that first appeared in Brick, Playboy, Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant, and more, as well as an introduction by Mario Batali, A Really Big Lunch offers “sage and succulent essays” for the literary gourmand (Shelf Awareness, starred review).

That S All I M Gonna Say Book Review:

The book has three sections. Section 1 Thats All Im Gonna Say About That was authored by Molly. It has stories that might be used in daily quiet time. It was not meant to be read as one continual story. It is intended to bring a chuckle, a tear, or stir some emotion to draw the reader in and have them want to have a good day, to tell someone they love them, or just simply do something extraordinary thats not really planned to lift someones spirit Section 2 Earp Family Lore was authored by Wesley. It involves family stories of Grandma Earp. Most took place in Eastland County of Texas. It involves having to move to a new country to start over. It shares how the family always stayed in touch and how when anyone had a problem, they all joined and helped until the burdened one could walk alone. There was a time of moving on upfrom mules for plowing to a tractor and, finally, to a car. The family went from fireplace heat to butane, from lamps to electric lights, and from iceboxes to refrigerators. Section 3 Roots from the Stump was written by Molly. It involves the family from Molly and Wess grandparents to the present day. And are we related to Wyatt Earp? Are we related to Cynthia Ann Parker and Quanah Parker?
